New book I found. It’s hilarious and covers great concepts like patience, metamorphosis, and migration. 

This was probably one of my favorite flannels to make and I really love how it turned out. I only made the one set, but I am happy to make more for sale. I’ll even throw in a copy of the book.  The flannels are much more vibrant than they appear on the screen.  Phone camera... you know!

My son is kind of goofy in the video, but you can see that the CHRYSALISES have two pouches with a divider in the middle so that the butterflies go in the back and the caterpillars go in to the front and then the butterfly emerges.

Pre-K Caterpillars, Butterflies, and Moths

Thank you to my co-worker Lesley who voluntarily helps me present storytimes that can be interactive and include props.  You really bring storytime to life!!

Before we read about caterpillars, butterflies, and moths, we talked about metamorphosis  a little bit.

Here are some caterpillars and the flying critters they turn into.  Who would have guessed?!

 

 

Books:

 

Butterfly, Butterfly by Petr Horacek. Lucy looks everywhere for her butterfly and finally finds it in the sky.

Waiting for Wings by Lois Ehlert (didn't have time to read).

 

  Don't Worry, Bear by Greg Folley.   PROPS manipulated by Lesley 

Bear worries about Caterpillar in his cocoon when it gets dark (turn off the lights), becomes windy (kids wooosh), starts to rain (mist kids with water), and snows (flurry fake snow over the kids).

 The rain and the snow were big hits!

Movement Activities:

 

"Harry Caterpillar":  In this recorded song by Robert Davis, Harry Caterpillar wiggles, jiggles, and rolls himself all the way across the street and becomes a butterfly.  These worm rattles made great caterpillars and at the end we tied scarves to them to make butterflies.

 

 



Bibbity Boppity Boo:

 

(I adapted "Willaby Wallaby Woo" to a phrase I would fumble less over: Bibbity Boppity Boo)

Letter of the Day:

The butterfly laid these colorful eggs and I guessed what letters were on them based on what words the kids were calling out to me.  I honestly don't look at the "eggs" first.

 

Pre-K - Butterflies

Thursday was a little bit of a smaller group, which worked well with our interactive books.  We read about caterpillars, butterflies, and moths.

Book:  Butterfly, Butterfly by Petr Horacek.  Lucy looks everywhere for her butterfly and finally finds it in the sky.  We identified lots of bugs in this book including a ladybug which was our memory box item.

Book: Don't Worry, Bear by Greg Foley.  The kids really helped me bring this book to life!  My colleague  read the book as I manipulated the felt board pieces to tell the story of a caterpillar who spins himself a cocoon.  Bear worries for caterpillar because it gets dark (turned the lights off), gets windy (we made gusts of wind), snows (we all threw packing popcorn in the air for a big snowstorm), and rains (spritzed some water).  Don't worry; caterpillar is just fine!  He emerges a beautiful moth.

Shakers: "Harry Caterpillar" is a song off the CD Exercise Party.  Harry Caterpillar wants to cross the street so he has to "wiggle and jiggle and roll himself over" all the way there.  I have a caterpillar puppet that turns into a a butterfly, which is exactly what Harry does at the end, so the puppet danced around with us.

Game:  Bibbity Boppity Boo with flannel butterflies.  Each child got a butterfly and I put their rhyming skills to the test.  "Bibbity Boppity Boo a  butterfly sat on my shoe", etc.

Letter of the Day:  Ll
