Pre-K Worms

We are still "digging into reading" this summer so we did a worm theme today in storytime.  After a month off, the group came back quite a bit smaller than it usually is but the kids were great!!

Don't forget:  If you are unable to make it to a morning storytime, I do family storytime on Thursdays at 6pm too!

Memory Box:  A lemon from Ned's New Home

Books: 

Ned's New Home by Kevin Tseng.  A worm tries out a variety of new homes when his current apple home begins to rot. 

Worms for Lunch by Leonid Gore.  Various creatures share what they like to eat for lunch.  Don't worry - the worms get away safely!

Worms by Sian Smith.  This book uses simple rhymes and engaging images to teach young readers about worms.

 

Music:  "Walter the Waltzing Worm" by Hap Palmer

I taught the kids how to waltz first and they really caught on!  Then I handed out scarves and let them waltz with their own "Walters" and follow the cues to have him move all over their bodies.

Cube Roll:  I got some nifty (non-hand made!) cubes to roll and added my own pictures. Today it landed on the yoga picture so we took elephant breaths.

Thankfully, a neighboring branch owns a die cut machine and cut lots of paper apples for me so each child could get one.  I punched a hole in each so the kids could do the rhyme with me and put their fingers through like worms.

We just finished our summer's second program for school-age kids and we had great fun!
 
The kids found some worms books to read while waiting for the other kids to check in.

 

 

We read Diary of a Worm by Doreen Cronin - it was very informative!  Spider put his 2 cents in too.

As kids finished their crafts, they headed over to another table for some real worm fun!  Every single worm (27) went home with kids to happy homes, gardens, and house plants.

Pre-K May 3, 2012 Worms!

Worms!

We don't limit attendance at Pre-K and it's quickly becoming a very full group.  We had 42 children, 6 siblings, and 27 adults.  I've never done a worm theme today, so today was super fun!

We have a bookworm friend that joins us for stories each week, but he was especially excited to come out this week when we said his rhyme.

Memory Box:  Lemon (from Ned's New Home)

Worms for Lunch by Leonid Gore.  Die-cut illustrations allow various creatures to describe what they like to each.  Whew, the worm gets away.

Music:  We pretended scarves were worms and they waltzed all over as we listened to "Walter the Waltzing Worm"

Finger Play:
Pretend you have five worms on one hand.  They are in a box (your other hand) because they lost all their wiggles.

Here are some worms who are, oh, so sad.
They've lost all the wiggles that they once had.
They wonder if you, just for today
would lend them your wiggles so they can play.

Wiggle them up and wiggle them down
Wiggle the worms around and around
Wiggle them high and wiggle them low
Wiggle them fast and wiggle them slow
Wiggle them over your shoes and your socks
Then wiggle them back into their box.

Craft:  This would be fun too if you used a paper cup instead and your child's finger as the "worm", but I used the craft supplies we had on hand.  These dancing worms were a pretty big hit.

Select your worm

You will also need:

      Green and brown crayon

      Cup

      Glue stick

      A FEW squares of tissue paper

1.Color the outside of the cup with crayons to make dirt and grass

2.Apply glue to the tissue paper and glue to the inside of cup

3.Put pipe cleaner through the hole in the cup

4.Move your worm up and down!

Wiggle Worms 1-30-12

Animal Song: "If I Was a Bird". We sing an animal song every week with puppets and today we enjoyed moving to this mellow song from my favorite CD.

Letter of the Day: Gg for grapes

Book: I Love Animals by Flora McDonnell.  In the spirit of Valentine's Day fast approaching, we read this big book version.

Movement:  We moved our arms like Henry with ribbons and my octopus puppet danced along.
